Celebrate Black History Month with Opelika Community Theatre!

Join us for Purlie Victorious, a heartwarming and hilarious stage play written by the legendary Ossie Davis. This powerful comedy follows Purlie Victorious Judson, a determined preacher on a mission to reclaim his family’s inheritance and bring justice to his community in the segregated South.

Blending sharp wit, unforgettable characters, and meaningful social commentary, Purlie Victorious is a celebration of resilience, hope, and the pursuit of freedom.

Celebrate Black History Month with us through laughter, inspiration, and powerful storytelling!

Letter From The Director

From the moment we decided to do Purlie we knew we had a story to tell. We knew we would face challenges in casting, rehearsals and getting the show to Production.

Dr. Beatrice Allen and I became friends about 4 1/2 years ago when we met at the city council meeting. She is George Allen's wife - my city councilman. When we met, we talked about the Theatre, and I invited her to come check us out. She told me we had one problem; We didn't have anything representing BLACK HISTORY. I told her I wanted to very much honor Black History, but I needed help. And, that's how the BLACK HISTORY ANNUAL SHOWCASE was born.

The first two years we presented a three day workshop honoring Black History, along with a special FREE workshop from a national choreographer for the youth in the community to be able to work with a professional mentor. Last year, when we came across the licensing rights for PURLIE, we saw the opportunity to honor Black History Month more deeply by presenting the stage show PURLIE VICTORIOUS along with the Black History Showcase.

This month of February celebrating Black History Month has been a whirlwind. We have faced challenges! We have had brick walls slammed in our faces at every turn. We've had to replace two actors, and less than two weeks ago, we were faced with closing the show when our supporting actress suffered a physical injury. I refused for us to be beaten down! Then, a miracle happened and Tonicia Price answered our distress call. She came in and stepped up to the challenge to play the role of Missy. We could not be more grateful. Our new motto is "Where every story Meets its stage" and OCT has not only this story but many stories to tell.

It takes a lot to present quality shows like PURLIE VICTORIOUS, our upcoming teen presentation of THE OUTSIDERS, and RENT. It takes physical and financial support to make sure that community theatre does not die. OCT is dedicated to being a safe place for a variety of all cultures and individuals. Theatre is therapy. Theatre people get you. Embrace you. And Love you. Opelika is a community rich in cultural varieties - that is WHO we are- and OCT aims to embrace every ounce that we can gather and soak up. We are expanding, we are growing , we are not going to back down.

I want to thank every single person who has worked on this show- my actors, my tech and stage crew, my consultants, my lighting and sound my BOARD members, my loyal O-Act parents who have volunteered and helped with concessions and tickets. I didn't include names because I was afraid I would leave somebody out so I just listed categories so I can make sure I'm covered. Thank you from the bottom of my heart..

Finally, I want to say, WE need your Help! Your Support ! Your love ! We need YOU keep this theatre alive!

Remember " Every story deserves a stage"! And we want OCT to be that Stage for the Opelika Community and surrounding area!

Now - RELAX! SIT BACK! SILENCE YOUR PHONES - and ENJOY THE SHOW!
